We often tend to take our health for granted, ignoring signs that could be an indication of a serious health issue. It is important to understand that the various signs and symptoms that we experience, are our body's way of telling us that something is wrong. No matter how small the indication may be, it is important to get yourself evaluated at the earliest. There are some symptoms that are common to many diseases, while others are specific to one or two. When our liver is not functioning properly, we are quite likely to experience various symptoms, some of which we often confused with other diseases. In this blog, we have listed some of the common symptoms associated with liver diseases with the help of experts specializing in liver transplants in India.
Itchy skin - When you feel itchy what is the first thing that comes to your mind? Something is because of an allergy others may conclude that it's due to an insect bite, however, sometimes the underlying reason is far more serious than you can think of. Itchiness and rashes could be an indication of a dysfunctional liver. This is primarily because of the elevated amounts of bile in the bloodstream, which is most likely to happen when your liver is not functioning properly. An increase in bile levels is caused by an obstruction in the bile ducts, which causes the bile to flow backwards, into the blood, and accumulate over time.
Spider angiomas - Have you ever heard about spider angiomas? These are tiny capillaries, visible under the skin, that somewhat resemble the shape of a spider. These are believed to be a result of an increase in estrogen levels in the body. The high oestrogen levels could be linked to liver dysfunction, which drastically impacts hormone metabolization. Top liver specialists in Pune suggest that you are likely to have spider angiomas on your face or legs.
Easy bruising and excess bleeding - Do you bleed and bruise more often than you used to? This could be an indication of a dysfunctional liver as well. Wondering how? The answer is simple. The liver helps in the synthesis of proteins that aid in clotting. When your liver is not functioning healthily, it is quite likely to interfere with the production of such proteins, thereby making you highly vulnerable to bleeding and bruising.
Bad breath - No doubt the problem could be linked to your poor oral hygiene, but it is not the case always. There are a plethora of other reasons which could be responsible for your bad breath and one of these is liver damage. Commonly referred to as foetor hepaticus, the bad breath caused by liver failure is usually fruity or musky and a result of an increase in the levels of dimethyl sulphide, which is very common in patients suffering from cirrhosis.
Blemishes and hyperpigmentation - blemishes and hyperpigmentation are believed to be the signs of unhealthy skin, usually associated with ageing. However it is pertinent to note that this is not the only reason why you are experiencing blemishes and hyperpigmentation, and sometimes, it could also be due to the increased levels of estrogen in your body. As a result of this, the production of melanin increases, leading to darkened spots all over your skin.
Redness in the palms - While most people do not know this, liver damage is likely to cause a burning and itching sensation in your palms, making them appear red. This is commonly referred to as palmer erythema and is a result of hormonal imbalance triggered by liver dysfunction.
If you are experiencing any of these symptoms it is important to see a doctor immediately. Although these do not necessarily mean that you have a serious liver condition, however, it is better to negate any such risks by going for a detailed evaluation and assessment.
