Have you heard the term aortic stenosis before? The condition is marked by the narrowing of the spinal canal. This puts an additional strain on the spinal cord and nerves as they tend to get compressed. The problem can be extremely painful and can lead to permanent damage if not addressed properly. It is more common in elderlies, especially those above 60 years of age and tends to worsen with time. Spinal stenosis can manifest in different ways and it is important to watch out for the symptoms and seek immediate medical interventions to avoid any complications. In this blog, we have discussed the most common indications of aortic stenosis with the help of experts specializing in spine treatment in Thane.
1. Neurogenic claudication - Also referred to as pseudoclaudication, the problem is marked by the narrowing of the spinal canal in the lumbar region and is characterized by intermittent pain in either one or both legs. The symptoms may vary from one person to another, and include:
As per the experts specializing in spine surgery in Mumbai, pain associated with neurogenic claudication gets alleviated when you lean your spine forward. Depending upon the severity, the condition can be treated either via an invasive, or non-invasive approach. The primary aim of the surgery is to create more space for the spinal nerves to remove unnecessary pressure from them.
2. Sciatica - Also referred to as lumbar radiculopathy, the condition is marked by the pinching of the sciatic nerve, which is more likely to happen when the stenosis is in the lumbar portion of the spine. It is characterized by mild to severe pain in the lower back, that may radiate towards the hips, buttocks and even the lower extremities of the legs. The pain may feel like a burning or stabbing sensation that may be unbearable at times. As per the experts from the best orthopaedic hospital in Pune, sciatica can usually affect one leg at a time, though it is quite possible that both legs may be involved.
3. Foot drop - This is caused by the compression of the nerves present in the L4 and L5 columns of the spinal canal and is categorized by the weakness of the muscles that are responsible for the movement of the front portion of the foot. As a result of this, you are not able to move your foot backwards and it seems like it is dropping down. This is where the name comes from. The condition can be easily managed by wearing lightweight braces. Physiotherapy, too, can help to a great extent.
4. Gait problems - It refers to an abnormality in the way in which a person walks, which could be due to various different reasons, including spinal stenosis. Depending upon the area of the spine that has been affected, the problem may vary from one person to another. If the stenosis is in the lumbar area of the spine, it can lead to foot drop and if it is in the cervical area, you may experience difficulties in maintaining your balance. These abnormalities might not be evident initially and these tend to aggravate gradually.
5. Pain in the arm - If you have stenosis in the cervical area of the spine, it can trigger pain that radiates towards the neck, shoulders and arms as well. Some people might confuse this for the symptoms of a heart attack, however, the pain is quite different and unlike that related to a heart attack, which feels like a pounding sensation, this one may feel like a burning sensation.
In case you have been experiencing any of these symptoms it is important to get yourself evaluated at the earliest. Early detection and treatment can help in the better management of the condition.
