Prior to undergoing a liver transplant, a thorough evaluation is necessary, involving:
A comprehensive physical examination and screening tests are conducted to assess overall health.
A liver biopsy may be performed to evaluate liver function or examine disease involvement.
Various blood tests are conducted to assess the overall health of various organs, including the liver.
Recommended tests may include computerised tomography (CT) scans, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans, positron emission tomography (PET) scans, or ultrasounds of the liver.
These assessments measure stress levels, financial considerations, and the support provided by friends and family.
Nutritional counselling, involving an assessment by a dietitian, helps determine nutritional status and provides recommendations for dietary intake before and after transplant surgery.
Various tests are conducted to ascertain the health of the cardiovascular system.
Given the higher demand for liver transplants compared to available donors in India, the waiting list is extensive. During this waiting period, your doctor initiates other treatments, ensuring your stable condition and preparing you for the upcoming transplant procedure. It is crucial to keep your doctor informed of any changes in your health and seek consultations as needed.
The liver transplant procedure takes place through distinct steps as listed below, and it is tailored to whether it involves a deceased donor or a living donor:
Urgent call
Following liver allocation, the hospital contacts you urgently, leading to admission.
Evaluation
Post-admission, a comprehensive series of tests and evaluations is conducted to ascertain your eligibility for transplant surgery.
Anesthesia
Upon receiving clearance for surgery, you are taken to the operation theatre, where general anaesthesia is administered for pain control.
Incision
An incision in the abdomen provides access to the liver.
Abdomen evaluation
A meticulous liver evaluation is performed to detect and address any potential abnormalities.
Native liver mobilization
Mobilisation of the native liver and isolation of structures like arteries and veins are performed.
Transection
Transection of attached structures is executed, and the diseased liver is removed.
Closure
The new liver is attached, connecting the blood vessels and bile duct, followed by the closure of incisions.
Adequate bleeding control
The final step ensures precise control over bleeding.
Scheduled appointment
In the case of a living donor, the surgery is scheduled, and admission takes place on the agreed-upon date.
Evaluation
After admission, various tests and evaluations are conducted to assess your fitness for transplant surgery.
Anesthesia
Once you are cleared for surgery by your doctor, you are brought to the operation theatre, and general anaesthesia is administered to manage pain.
Incision
An abdominal incision provides access to the liver.
