After the bone marrow transplant procedure, injected cells enter the bone marrow, initiating the process of engraftment. Under normal circumstances, new blood cell production begins within two to three weeks. The progress is monitored through regular blood tests, and patients may require blood cell infusions until their own bone marrow becomes fully functional.
During this phase, vigilance is crucial to identify and address potential side effects such as nausea, vomiting, and infections. Any occurrences of these symptoms should be promptly reported to the doctor. If no side effects arise, and blood counts recover, the patient may be discharged from the hospital after a few days. However, regular follow-up visits are necessary.
Patients and their families are advised to arrange for a stay near the hospital as the body may take about three months to adjust to the transplanted cells and develop immunity.
Your healthcare team will design a program to monitor long-term side effects, which may manifest months after the transplant process. While a bone marrow transplant can significantly improve the quality of life, adherence to post-procedure guidelines is crucial for a successful recovery and normal living.
